This teaching kit has been designed to provide students with an overview of the daily newspaper. The objective of Newshounds is to familiarize students with newspaper content and writing styles, so that they may use the newspapers throughout their lives as a source of information and entertainment.

Activity 1
Look at the photographs in the newspaper. (Do not include photos in ads.) Choose the two photos that you think best illustrate the news stories they accompany. Staple or clip them to this activity sheet or glue them on a piece of paper.
Activity 2
Form a team of three or four. You have 10 minutes. List all the examples of opinion you can find in one complete edition of the newspaper. What clues were provided by the newspaper to help you identify each item as opinion? Be prepared to share your findings with the class.
