About the kit

This unit has been designed to help your students make sense of economics and apply some of the basic terms to current events. There are 29 activities that have been created to help bring economic terms to life along with background information sheets for students and teachers.

It begins with a basic understanding about how the wants and needs of Canadians are met and the role government plays in assuring that our needs and wants are met.

The material is designed for use in senior elementary grades and for students in business/ economics classes at the secondary level.

Sample Activities (2)

Activity 1

Scan the Toronto Star to identify the needs that plague nations around the world. Identify 5 stories that outline what has stood in the way between a nation / group trying to provide for its people and the people themselves.

Activity 2

Look through the pages of the Toronto Star and locate ten businesses. Complete the chart using the information from the article and what you have learned in this unit. Study and discuss the two examples provided before finding ten examples of your own.
