About the kit
Grade Level:Gr 5 and up
Subject Focus: Social Studies, Community, Politics, Language Arts

Students love to be involved in hands-on activities that have a meaning beyond the four walls of their classroom. Such activities can offer almost unlimited scope for learning. With this kit, you can explore ethical and moral concepts using very specific "real life" situations. The activities focus on using the Toronto Star, and expand from there into reflections on their own lives and the lives of others. The situations are all very close to home, in terms of every day life, and the day-to-day decisions we must all make.

The kit activities allow you to meet selected curriculum requirements at the elementary level for grades five through eight. At the secondary level the activities focus on portions of the Canadian and World Issues, Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology courses. They also cover components of the Guidance courses and elements of the Teacher-Advisor program. The activities may also be used to cover selected components of the Grade 10 Canadian History and Civics courses. The writing components of the activities cover many of the skills requirements in the Social Studies and English curriculum.

ACTIVITY 1

Some recent shootings have involved people who live in one community and often know each other. Even in cases like this, the police rarely get help. Write a letter to someone who might be a witness in a situation like this to persuade them to help the police.

ACTIVITY 2

Look in the Toronto Star for stories about companies that have been faced with problems that they have solved. List all the moral and ethical considerations that might have been involved in solving that problem and the possible consequences of the solution.
