Language Focus: Map reading, Canada's provinces and territories
Materials: Several copies of The Toronto Star
Procedure:
1. Group learners in fours. Give each group a newspaper.
2. Have learners turn to the CANADA page of the "A" Section. Learners circle all references to cities and provinces, then list them.
3. Learners find out in which province or territory each city is located.
4. As a class, choose the most interesting story on the CANADA pages. Discuss the story. Then ask learners to find out at least one piece of information about the city where the story occurred. Discuss possible sources of information (Canada almanac, atlas, travel book, library...)
5. The next day, have learners share their information. Have learners write a story about the city, combining the information from all the learners.
Variation: Have resources for finding information about Canadian cities available in the classroom (Canadian encyclopaedia, Canadian almanac, atlas, travel book...). Group learners. Give each group a resource. Groups use the resource to find five pieces of information about the city (from #4). Each group presents their information and reports on the usefulness of the resource they used.
